John the Baptist was the VOICE.
Jesus was the WORD.
When asked who he was, John said he was the VOICE PREPARING the way for the Lord (see John 1: 19 – 27).
The scripture he quoted was Isaiah 40:3:
‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord.’
When Isaiah lived and prophesied there were few roads. When kings traveled, roads were constructed so that the king would not have to travel over bumpy, rocky, uneven ground, or get ‘stuck in the mud’.
Isaiah said that before the glory of the Lord arrived, that a VOICE would be heard (John the Baptist) who would urge the people to make the way straight. With his VOICE, John boldly called people to get ready for the arrival of the Messiah, Jesus, to repent and to be baptized!
