27 Times…

What about 27 times?

Well, that is the number of times that the phrase, ‘For His lovingkindness is everlasting’, is repeated in Psalm 136. The Psalm only has 26 verses, so every verse has the phrase once and one has it twice.

What does the word ‘lovingkindness’  mean? In Hebrew the word is ‘chesed’, which means loyal love, covenant kindness, mercy, lovingkindness. The word is packed with wonderful meaning. It tells us that God has covenant loyalty towards us. He loves us because He remembers the covenant made on our behalf.

The Psalmist stated one of the Lord’s mighty acts, such as the parting of the Red Sea (so the people could leave Egypt quickly). That was a wonderfully powerful act of deliverance. For after that, the Israelites were able to get moving on their way to the Promised Land.

There is another wonderful thing about the fact that the phrase is used 27 times. It is a reminder of just how much God loves and takes care of us. Let us never forget that. Hopefully by being reminded how much God loves us, it will make an impression on our hearts and minds!
