Colossians 3: 12 – 17…Put On These Things…

I encourage you to grab your Bible and take a look at this passage with me. Only 6 verses today, but they are filled with life!

This passage has always been one of my favorites. Kathy and I had it read at our wedding, 32 years ago this month! It hasn’t changed since then, but boy have we!

As we do an overview of the chapter I wanted to highlight words that are repeated. These are emphasis points. Here are some: ‘Put on’, ‘…One Another’, ‘Let…this happen’, ‘You’, ‘Do’, ‘Thankful’!

Verse 12 –

Chosen of God (adopted into His Family)

Put On (Like putting on clothes) A heart (tender mercies) of…

Compassion, kindness (mercy), humility (having a humble opinion of one’s self), gentleness, patience (longsuffering)

Verse 13 –

Bearing With (Showing Tolerance for one another) And Forgiving (Pardon, and to show grace) One Another – How much better things would be if we would simply forgive one another when we are offended.

Verse 14 –

Beyond all of these Put on (like putting on clothes) love

Listen to verses 12 – 14 in the Message “12-14So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.”

Verse 15 –

Let the Peace of Christ Rule (and let it rule over all the things that are vying for your heart like anxiety, fear, worry, anger, jealousy) in your hearts,

One Body – not several, but one! One Church, One Lord, One Savior! One Heaven! We ought to start getting along with each other now. We will be spending a lot of time together in the future! J

Verse 16 –

Let the Word of Christ (the living, active, dynamic, life giving, eternal, unchanging, fully divine Word) Richly (abundantly) Dwell within you (a parallel thought to Ephesians 5:19 where Paul basically said the same thing).

The result of the overflow of His Word richly dwelling in us is psalms, hymns and spiritual songs – an outflow of praise unto Him from our hearts…Try it. Singing songs may be a foreign thing to you. You may associate it with just Sunday morning, or musical performances. But God gave you a voice. Sing in the shower; hum a tune in the garden. Whistle in the car!

One Another – The Christian life is not just you and Jesus. We are part of a body. The Lord intended us to have relationship with each other, to work together, to talk to each other, to cooperate. You and I were not meant to be ‘Lone Ranger’ Christians, Marlboro men out on the lonesome trail!

Verse 17 –

Whatever you do, do all in the name of the LJC (in the name of means with the character of) – so in the name of the LJC means as if Jesus was doing it through you!

Whatever you do (in your personal life, with your family, at work, in your marriage, with your children, at the store, in your down time, in your words, attitudes and actions)

Listen to verses 15 – 17 in The Message “15-17Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing; sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.”
